The Referee's Eye: Pre-Submission Peer Review
The objection that sinks your submission is usually invisible to you specifically. You've read this "final" draft too many times to see it objectively anymore, and the only person who does read it fresh is a referee. By then there's nothing for you to do but wait . . . This agent reads your draft the way that referee will, before you send it, while there's still time to act on what it finds.
What it does
The most useful peer review engages with the argument you actually made, not a simplified version of it, not the argument the reviewer wished you had made. This agent models that kind of review: hostile but fair. Hostile means it is testing your argument, not helping you publish. Fair means it is testing the argument on the page, not a caricature of it.
It starts by characterizing your argument accurately, in its own words, before any evaluation. Use this as your first check: did it understand what you were arguing? If yes, the criticism that follows is aimed at your real argument and worth your attention. If no, the review is useless, and this agent is built not to produce useless reviews.
Who it's for
Authors with a final draft, preparing to submit, who want to know what a hostile but fair referee would find before an editor does. Also useful for anyone developing their own reviewing judgment, since it models what a rigorous review looks like from the inside.
What you get back
A clear recommendation. Accept, reject, major revision, or minor revision, stated early, with the primary reason. Not buried at the end of three pages of comments.
The fatal objection before the referee does. The single argument a hostile reviewer would use to reject. This is what you need before submission, not after. Knowing it gives you time to address it, pre-empt it, or make peace with the risk.
What would change the verdict. Not "engage more with the literature," that is not actionable. The specific, concrete revision that would move a major revision to a minor one, or a rejection to a revise-and-resubmit.
Calibration
Specify the target journal and the review calibrates to its known standards, scope, and editorial orientation.
A note on ethical use
This agent is for pre-submission self-review and for developing reviewing judgment. Using it to write a review you have committed to write for a journal, submitting its output as your own without doing the intellectual work, is a breach of scholarly ethics. The agent names this. It cannot prevent it.
Scope
Academic articles in the qualitative human and social sciences.
