Ignition UDT Builder

Created from 10+ years of manufacturing and industrial automation experience across food packaging, planter-part manufacturing, and Tier 1 automotive environments, with Ignition used in production-facing work over that span. The skill packages practical SCADA judgment around maintainable expressions, operator-safe behavior, troubleshooting habits, and realistic Designer/Gateway validation workflows.

What This Skill Helps With

Ignition UDT Builder helps design, review, and document Ignition 8.1 User Defined Type models from user-provided artifacts. It is built for offline work where the AI cannot reach the Gateway and must reason from supplied tag exports, screenshots, naming standards, parameter lists, PLC notes, alarm requirements, and described behavior.

Use it when you need help with:

  • Reusable UDT type structures for pumps, valves, meters, tanks, skids, production lines, instruments, and equipment families.
  • UDT parameters, instance overrides, naming standards, type inheritance, nested UDTs, and relative typeId planning.
  • Expression tags, generated addresses, dynamic path planning, quality helpers, and faceplate-safe status members.
  • Alarm modeling, display paths, labels, enabled behavior, priorities, setpoints, and alarm rollup/navigation planning.
  • Perspective-facing row fields such as asset name, area, equipment type, detail keys, sort order, status, and alarm/attention flags.
  • Human implementation checklists for import review, post-import validation, member paths, parameter paths, alarm fields, and Perspective binding fields.

Designed For

  • Ignition developers creating reusable tag models for repeated equipment.
  • Controls and automation engineers standardizing UDTs before a site import.
  • SCADA teams reviewing inherited, nested, or copied UDT structures from exports.
  • Buyers who want structured UDT guidance without giving the AI live Gateway access, credentials, or tag-browse access.

Example Prompt

I have three pump skids in Ignition 8.1 and want a reusable UDT with AssetName, Area, PLC root path, PV, Running, Faulted, HighPV alarm, and Perspective row fields. I can provide a naming standard, alarm limits, and a screenshot of the current tag folder. Help me draft the UDT model and implementation checklist.

Example Output

Draft a reusable PumpSkid UDT offline. Do not connect to a live Gateway, browse tags, import remotely, or request credentials. Use the screenshot and naming standard only as reference inputs.

{
  "udtName": "PumpSkid",
  "parameters": {
    "AssetName": "P-101",
    "Area": "Utilities",
    "PLCRootPath": "[default]PLC/PumpSkids/P101",
    "HighPVLimit": 85
  },
  "tags": [
    { "name": "PV", "type": "Float4", "opcItemPath": "{PLCRootPath}/PV" },
    { "name": "Running", "type": "Boolean", "opcItemPath": "{PLCRootPath}/Running" },
    { "name": "Faulted", "type": "Boolean", "opcItemPath": "{PLCRootPath}/Faulted" }
  ],
  "alarms": [
    { "tag": "PV", "name": "HighPV", "mode": "AboveValue", "setpoint": "{HighPVLimit}" }
  ],
  "perspectiveRow": {
    "assetName": "{AssetName}",
    "area": "{Area}",
    "pv": "{PV}",
    "running": "{Running}",
    "faulted": "{Faulted}"
  }
}

Checklist: confirm naming standard, map each PLC path, verify data types, set alarm priority and limits, create one test instance per skid, compare against the current folder screenshot, document Perspective binding fields, and perform final Gateway import manually after review.

Offline Capafy Edition

This Capafy edition is a download skill for offline Ignition UDT design and review from user-provided evidence. It does not require live Gateway access, does not call external APIs, does not request credentials, does not browse tags, and does not import or modify a running Ignition system.

Live Gateway reads, writes, tag browsing, production imports, project edits, credential handling, or remote validation are outside this download edition and require separate authorization, backups, and target-side validation by the buyer.
