File Tidy: AI File Renamer with Preview & Undo

Downloads full of "Document (3).pdf", scans called "IMG_4521", invoices you can never find? File Tidy reads every file in a folder and gives it a clear, searchable name, but only after you have seen and approved every change.

How it works

1. Ask your AI agent to tidy a folder, for example: "Tidy my Downloads folder with file-tidy".
2. A local page opens in your browser right away. The agent reads the files and the rows fill in as it goes, each with a card: type, counterparty, subject, reference number and keywords.
3. Review and edit. Fix any type, counterparty, reference or date, exclude files, and choose how to organise them. Nothing changes until you click Apply.
4. Find anything later by type, counterparty, subject, reference or year, from the same page or with a double-click on the "Find files (File Tidy)" shortcut it leaves in the folder.

What makes it different

• It reads the content. Invoices, contracts, quotes, price lists, minutes: the type and the counterparty come from what is written in the document, not from rules you have to write.
• The real date. It uses the date a photo was taken or the date stored inside PDF and Office files, not the day you downloaded or copied them.
• Preview first, always. Every new name and folder is shown before anything changes. Files are never overwritten and their content is never modified.
• Full undo. Every session is logged. Undo a whole session or a single file at any time, even after moving files around. Folders it created are removed if they end up empty.
• Consistent over time. It remembers your types and counterparties, so "Tec Care" stays "Tec Care" and not "TecCare srl" the next time. Run it again on the same folder and only new files are processed.

• Rename only: files stay where they are.
• By type: Invoices/, Contracts/, Quotes/…
• By year, then type: 2025/Invoices/, 2026/Contracts/…
• By file type: PDF/, Images/, Spreadsheets/…

The counterparty in the file name can be switched off for shared or confidential folders.

Requirements

• An AI agent with access to your files: Claude Code, Codex or OpenClaw. The agent's usage is billed by its provider according to your plan.
• Python 3.8 or later. No extra packages are required; Pillow, PyMuPDF or pypdf improve date and text detection if installed.
• Designed for macOS, Windows and Linux; tested on macOS.

Privacy

File Tidy runs on your computer. The scripts send nothing anywhere: the browser page is served only on your own machine and closes by itself after 30 minutes of inactivity. To describe each file, your AI agent reads a short text sample of it, under the terms of the AI provider you already use.

Safety

• Whole drives, your home folder and system or application folders are refused.
• Hidden files, system files, shortcuts, programs and temporary Office files are skipped.
• File names are made safe for Windows, macOS and Linux.
• Up to 2,000 files per session; larger folders can be done subfolder by subfolder.

Good to know

• Moving files into new folders can break shortcuts and links between files (for example in Excel). Choose "Rename only" if that matters to you.
• Scanned PDFs without a text layer are described from their name and folder, unless your agent can view images.
• Keep the hidden .file-tidy folder: the undo history lives there.

FAQ

Can I undo everything?
Yes. Every session can be undone from the History tab or by asking your agent, and single files can be restored from the search page.

Does it work on cloud folders?
Yes, including iCloud Drive, OneDrive and Dropbox folders on your computer. Syncing many renamed files may take a while.

Can I choose the types myself?
Yes. Give your agent a list of types, or correct them in the preview page. Your choices are remembered.

Does it change the content of my files?
Never. Only names and, if you choose, folders change.
