Subtitle Glossary Enforcer

Keep names, terminology, and recurring corrections consistent across SRT subtitle files — using your own glossary and a review-first workflow.

Subtitle Glossary Enforcer scans your subtitle file for glossary matches, shows exactly what it found, and lets you choose what to apply before any subtitle text is changed.

No AI guessing. No fuzzy matching. No silent conflict resolution.

What It Does

  • Scans UTF-8 SRT subtitles using your custom glossary
  • Finds specified names, terms, spelling variants, and recurring text corrections
  • Produces a structured review report before making changes
  • Shows the matched text, cue reference, position, proposed replacement, and rule
  • Lets you explicitly select which occurrences or rules to apply
  • Applies only the selected safe matches
  • Preserves subtitle timing and cue order
  • Detects overlapping matches and marks them as conflicts
  • Refuses conflicting selections instead of guessing which correction should win
  • Validates the subtitle again after applying changes

How It Works

1. Create Your Glossary

Define the terms and variants you want to enforce in a custom glossary JSON file.

For example, a glossary can specify that several recurring spellings or variants should be replaced with one preferred form.

2. Scan Your SRT

Run the scan command with your subtitle file and glossary.

Scan mode is review-only by default.

Your SRT is not modified during scanning.

The tool generates a structured report showing the occurrences it found and the proposed replacements.

3. Review the Matches

Inspect the report and decide which corrections should be applied.

You can select specific occurrences or supported rule-level matches instead of automatically changing everything.

4. Apply Selected Corrections

Run apply with an explicit selection.

Only the selected safe matches are changed. Unselected subtitle text remains untouched.

If the requested selection contains a conflicting match, the apply operation is rejected atomically rather than partially applying ambiguous corrections.

Designed for Predictable Subtitle Workflows

This tool is useful when subtitles repeatedly contain:

  • Character or speaker name variants
  • Product and brand terminology
  • Place names
  • Project-specific terminology
  • Recurring transcription spellings
  • Localization terminology that must stay consistent
  • Other known text variants that should map to a preferred form

The glossary is supplied by you. The tool does not try to infer what a word “should” mean.

Matching Behavior

Matching is:

  • Literal
  • Case-sensitive
  • NFC-normalized for canonically equivalent Unicode text
  • Deterministic

The tool does not perform fuzzy matching, semantic correction, language detection, translation, or AI proofreading.

This makes its behavior suitable for workflows where predictable corrections are more important than automatic guessing.

Conflict Safety

Different glossary rules or variants can sometimes target overlapping text.

Subtitle Glossary Enforcer does not silently choose a winner.

Overlapping matches are reported as conflicts. If your apply selection contains a conflict, the operation is refused instead of producing a partially corrected subtitle.

What Stays Unchanged

Applying glossary corrections does not intentionally change:

  • Subtitle timestamps
  • Cue order
  • Unselected subtitle text

The tool is designed specifically for controlled text replacement, not subtitle timing correction or reformatting.

Local & Self-Contained

The packaged tool runs locally using its included runtime.

  • No AI API required
  • No cloud processing required
  • No external glossary service required
  • No npm install required for the packaged tool

Your glossary and subtitle processing stay in your local workflow.

Requirements

  • Node.js 22.22.2 or later
  • UTF-8 SRT subtitle files
  • A glossary JSON file following the included schema

The release was validated on Windows x64 with Node.js 24.14.0.

Node.js 22.22.2 is the declared minimum version but was not separately validated in the release environment. macOS and Linux were not tested for this release.

Important Limitations

Subtitle Glossary Enforcer does not provide:

  • AI proofreading
  • Fuzzy or semantic matching
  • Automatic language detection
  • Translation
  • Speech recognition or ASR correction
  • Subtitle timing correction
  • Built-in commercial or domain-specific glossaries
  • Automatic conflict resolution

It works from the glossary rules you provide.

Included

The download includes the self-contained Subtitle Glossary Enforcer Skill, command-line workflow, public schema documentation, and usage instructions.

Best For

Subtitle editors, localization workflows, creators, teams, and anyone who needs repeatable terminology corrections across SRT subtitles without handing control to an AI system.

Define the rules. Review the matches. Apply only what you approve.
